Executive Bio: Ronnie Burt

President & CEO, Visit KC

A passionate ambassador for Kansas City, Ronnie Burt was appointed president and chief executive officer for Visit KC, the region’s leading hospitality and tourism organization, in May 2014.

With more than 20 years of hospitality and tourism industry experience, Burt came to Kansas City after serving as vice president of sales and services for Destination DC, the tourism marketing organization for the nation’s capital.  He also previously served as senior vice president of sales and services for the Indianapolis Convention and Visitors Association (now Visit Indy) and vice president of sales and services for the Baltimore Area Convention and Visitors Association.

Burt is actively involved with several local professional industry associations, including the American Royal Advisory Board, the Heartland Chapter of the Professional Convention Management Association (PCMA), the Hospitality Advisory Board at Johnson County Community College’s Hospitality Management Program, the Kansas City Chapter of Meeting Professionals International (MPI) and the Missouri Association of Convention and Visitor Bureaus. He also serves on the executive committee for the Downtown Council of Kansas City. Most recently he was appointed as an advisory director on the American Royal board.

On a national scale, in 2015 he was appointed to the Destination Marketing Association International Board of Directors. He is also an active member of several industry associations—including PCMA, MPI, the American Society of Association Executives and the National Coalition of Black Meeting Planners.

Under his guidance and leadership over the last two years, Visit KC has achieved several key accomplishments, including:

  • The adoption of the organization’s new name, Visit KC, in fall 2014;
  • The debut of Visit KC’s new downtown headquarters in March 2015;
  • The return of the Kansas City Film Commission, now known as the KC Film + New Media Office; (In 2015, American Ninja Warrior was just one of the many productions attracted to KC.)
  • Formation of the Kansas City Hospitality Alliance—a coalition of six local tourism organizations;
  • Securing the 2017 U.S. Figure Skating Championships and the renewal of the Big 12 Men’s Basketball Championship through 2020, both in conjunction with the Kansas City Sports Commission;
  • Extending Cerner’s annual meeting for two additional years;
  • Announcing KC’s hosting of the Shriners International meeting in 2020; and
  • Capitalizing on the success of Kansas City Restaurant Week with the additions of hotel and retail components in 2015.

In addition to the organizational accomplishments, Burt was recently named to the 2016 Kansas City Business Journal’s Power 100, a list of the region’s business elite , one of “KC’s 50 Most Powerful” by 435 Magazine andIngram’s 250” by Ingram’s magazine, a list of the most powerful business leaders in the Kansas City area.
