DESCRIPTION: Visitors can tour the 358,000-square-foot Harley-Davidson Vehicle and Powertrain Operations plant in Kansas City, Mo. where employees produce motorcycles in the Sportster, Dyna and VRSC families from fabrication and finishing through final assembly.

HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Displays in the tour center guide visitors through the various manufacturing and assembly processes. 
  • Two tour experiences are available:
    • Free Tours: After an introductory video, visitors take guided tours of the factory floor and witness a wide range of steps in the production process including welding, laser cutting, frame bending, polishing and assembly. The experience lasts one hour.
    • Steel Toe Tours: Visitors will go deeper into our fabrication and assembly areas than we have ever allowed the public before. To get up close to the action we will provide steel toe covers and a Harley-Davidson high visibility vest. The cost of $35 also includes an exclusive Steel Toe Tour pin, a group photo taken inside the factory and a $5 coupon for our gift shop. The experience lasts two hours.

HOURS: The Tour Center and gift shop: Open 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Mon.-Fri. Tours begin at regular intervals 9 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Last tour begins at 1:30 p.m. The Steel Toe Tours begin at 9:15 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. Mon.-Thurs.

REQUIREMENTS: Fully enclosed, low-heeled shoes (1 in. or below) are required. Children under the age of 12 are welcome in the Tour Center, but are not allowed on the factory tour. Visitors under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult at all times.

HISTORY: In 1901, William S. Harley drew a blueprint for an engine designed to fit into a bicycle. Shortly thereafter, William Harley and Arthur Davidson made the first Harley-Davidson motorcycle available to the public. The racer bike was built in a small 10-foot by 15-foot wooden shed. Today, Harley-Davidson is one of the most well-known motorcycle companies in the world.

HANDS-ON ACTIVITIES: Visitors will have the opportunity to sit on current production motorcycles.

WHAT’S NEARBY: The United Federation of Doll Clubs Museum is only one mile away. Kansas City’s Zona Rosa shopping center is a short drive away and offers a wide variety of shopping and dining options. The KCI Airport is also nearby.

DID YOU KNOW: Since 1980, Harley-Davidson customers, dealers, suppliers and employees have raised more than $71 million for the Muscular Dystrophy Association. The money goes to research and program services for children and adults who suffer from muscular dystrophy.

DON’T FORGET: Visitors who wish to tour the factory must wear fully enclosed shoes with a heel no higher than one inch. 

GROUP TOURS: Reservations are required for groups of 10 or more.

DRIVING DIRECTIONS:

From the north: Take I-29 south toward Kansas City. Follow I-29 south and take exit 12 for NW 112th Street. Turn right at NW 112th Street and turn left at N. Congress Avenue. Factory will be on the right.

From the south: Take I-35 or US-71 north. Merge onto I-29 north and take exit 12 for NW 112th Street. Turn right at NW 112th Street and turn left at N. Congress Avenue. Factory will be on the left.

From the east: Take I-70 west to I-29/I-35 north. Merge onto I-29 north and take exit 12 for NW 112th Street. Turn left at N. Congress Avenue. Factory will be on the left.

From the west: Take I-70 east toward Kansas City and take exit 411B to merge onto I-435 north. Take exit 24 152 east then merge right onto I-29 north. Take exit 12 for NW 112th Street. Turn right at NW 112th Street and turn left at N Congress Avenue. Factory will be on the left.
