DESCRIPTION: One of Kansas City’s favorite shopping and entertainment destinations, Legends Outlets Kansas City, boasts 1.1 million square feet of retail space, plus a movie theatre, and several hotels. Opened in April 2006, The Legends is adjacent to Kansas Speedway in the booming Village West development of Kansas City, Kan.

HIGHLIGHTS:

  • The open-air district’s impressive list of almost 100 shops and restaurants includes several names that are new to the state, region and nation—including the country’s first T-REX restaurant.
  • A state-of-the-art, 14-screen movie complex, The Legends 14 Theatre features luxury stadium seating, the latest audio technology and a VIP balcony with a full-service bar. The theatre also houses Kansas City’s largest movie theatre auditorium with more than 600 seats.
  • Dave and Buster’s serves up fun in an upscale dining environment full of the latest and greatest interactive entertainment games.
  • The shopping district is sprinkled with outdoor art that recognizes the state’s heritage. Murals, medallions and plaques commemorate important moments and people in Kansas history—including Clyde Tombaugh, the scientist who discovered Pluto, and Hattie McDaniel, the first African American ever to receive an Academy Award. Bronze statues capture the likeness of other Kansas legends such as gunslinger Wyatt Earp and President Dwight D. Eisenhower. HOURS: Regular operating hours: 10 a.m.-9 p.m. Mon.-Sat. and 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Sun. Individual store and restaurant hours may vary.

HISTORY: Developed, owned and operated by RED Development, Legends held its grand opening in April 2006. More than 500,000 people attended the 16-day event. The company has developed similar “lifestyle centers” in Nebraska, Wisconsin and Minnesota.  

WHERE TO GET LUNCH: The district’s 30+ restaurants are sure to appeal to every budget and appetite.

HANDS-ON ACTIVITIES: Kids can unearth dinosaur fossils at T-REX’s discovery stations or create their own prehistoric friends at Build-A-Dino.

WHAT’S NEARBY: In addition to shopping and entertainment, the Village West development also houses the Great Wolf Lodge water park, NASCAR’s Kansas Speedway and CommunityAmerica Ballpark, home to the Kansas City T-Bones Baseball Club. Also nearby, the 180,000-square-foot Cabela’s sporting goods store features incredible dioramas of assorted wildlife.

ANNUAL SPECIAL EVENTS:

  • A Legendary Holiday (November-December)—the entertainment district gets into the holiday spirit with a 50-foot live Christmas tree and oversized holiday ornaments. Ice sculpting demonstrations and Victorian carolers add to the seasonal ambience.
  • Live at The Legends (June-August)—Summer concert series featuring live local and regional bands every Saturday evening.

DID YOU KNOW: The year-round, 60-foot Civic Courtyard fountain was designed by WET Design, the team behind the Bellagio fountains in Las Vegas.

From the north: Take I-435 South and exit onto State Avenue West (exit # 13). Turn right on Village West Parkway to Prairie Crossing.

From the south: Take I-435 North to State Avenue West (exit # 13B). Turn right on Village West Parkway to Prairie Crossing.

From the east: Take I-70 West and exit onto I-435 North (exit # 411 B). Take the second exit off I-435 onto State Avenue West (exit # 13B). Turn right on Village West Parkway to Prairie Crossing.

From the west: Take I-70 East and exit onto I-435 North (exit # 411 B). Take the second exit off I-435 onto State Avenue West (exit # 13B). Turn right on Village West Parkway to Prairie Crossing.

PARKING: Surface parking surrounds The Legends. Additional parking is available in a multi-level garage located on the northwest side of The Legends.
