Highlights:
The Kansas City Museum is a city museum. This means it is a museum that tells the stories of Kansas City and its people. We tell these stories through exhibits, programs, and events that focus on history and the humanities. The Kansas City Museum cultivates awareness and knowledge about the City’s past, present, and future to connect people, places, and perspectives with the goal of fostering learning, encouraging conversations, promoting health and well-being, and illuminating a shared humanity.
As the Kansas City Museum explores our City’s past, present, and future, we do so with the conviction that recognizing and understanding the whole story of our City’s history is healing. Therefore, the Museum aims to be the “Home of the Whole Story” where lived experiences from individuals, neighborhoods, and communities that are often underrepresented and overlooked are acknowledged, honored, and elevated to tell more accurate, complex, and complete stories of our City and its people.
Where to eat: Elixir, the Kansas City Museum’s soda fountain in Corinthian Hall, is now open. The Museum is partnering with local restaurants and coffee shops—including The Spot Coffee Bakery & Café, The French Market & Café, Marcell Coffee, and Fairway Creamery—to offer a limited menu of grab-and-go/pre-packaged food items such as sandwiches, salads, charcuterie plates, baked goods, chips, and more.
House sodas, bottled juices, ice cream scoops (try the Corinthian Crunch, a museum exclusive by Fairway Creamery), sundaes, milkshakes, phosphates, coffee and espresso drinks, Hugo tea, wine, beer, and select cocktails will also be offered.
What’s nearby: River Market
Annual/special events: Our signature annual events include The Derby Party, Day of the Dead Celebration, and The Fairy Princess.
Did you know: The Kansas City Museum property was the former estate of lumber baron R.A. Long and his family. The property was completed in 1910 and became a public museum in 1940.
Don’t forget: To check out Wisteria, our boutique. Wisteria is a retail boutique located on the first floor of Corinthian Hall. Wisteria offers a selection of jewelry, clothing, accessories, home décor, books, games, and more including small batch collections of items created by local and regional artists and designers who have been inspired by our city’s history and cultural heritage.
On selected Thursdays, Wisteria hosts a Sip & Shop from 5:00 to 7:30 p.m. offering a chance to see what’s new in the boutique, meet our featured artist, and enjoy a beverage and light snack while you shop.
